Welcome

Welcome!, I've posted a description of  Black Rock Canyon, located 10 miles southeast of Deming, New Mexico.  It's an interesting place, close to town and easy to get to, It's very snakey keep a look out for those rattlers.  I've made about a dozen trips to Black Rock Canyon and have had more close encounters with rattle snakes than I care for.   Watch where you step and if you climb rocks show extreme caution.   There are open adits (mine tunnels) and stopes in the canyon, be careful, all mines are inherently dangerous and the ones at Black Rock are no exception.   A rite of passage for some local teens has long been a night time excursion into the Manganese Valley Mine. It extends hundreds of feet into the mountain and there is a Y with an open stope (a pit)  at least 100 ft. deep, it's truly a miracle that nobody has fallen in over the years.  Other adits will tempt the more adventurous, but remember, If You have any doubts "Just Stay Out" .  Don't be fooled by  Black Rock Canyon's proximity to town, it is a wilderness area with all the inherent dangers of a wild and desolate place.
The picture below  shows Shrine Hill, it's on the South side of the canyon, in 1930 miners hauled the materials to the top and built a shrine with a large cross, it needs repairs now, but it still stands as a testament to their labor of love and devotion.
